These Black and Blue Red Zone Days (ISBN 979-8-218-17561-0)

Picture

Just as life during the pandemic was color-coded with different hues representing different levels of danger, life in its aftermath has become shaded in similar ways. As a self-styled "Seeker of Beauty with Beauty," (borrowing from a quote by W.E.B. Du Bois), the author of These Black and Blue Red Zone Days brings to life mesmerizing moments of recognition revealing the startling depths and vulnerabilities of our shared humanity during powerfully challenging times.

The paperback edition of THESE BLACK & BLUE RED ZONE DAYS (ISBN: 979-8-218-17561-0) is the first of an evolving 3-editon set that explores through art, letters, poetry, and essays different aspects of the pandemic’s unfolding, its lingering impact, and what we are still learning from it. After its global release on June 15, 2023, the eBook edition landed at number 6 in the category for letters and essays on Amazon, and at number 1 in the category for social theory.

In these pages, readers experience instances of unexpected grace, such as when encountering two physically challenged people attempting to return home after venturing out on foot, and in a wheelchair, to find food during lockdown in Savannah, Georgia. There are acknowledgements of absurdities like simultaneously risking one’s life to appear in court to argue the urgency, or non-urgency, of painting a back-yard shed. Letters to "Homeless Friends of the Library," to the author's own 14-year-old self, and to diverse public “essential” servants, captured the sorrow of heartbreaking choices and the unexpected beauty of astonishing compassion.

If the peeled-back layers of the pandemic have magnified societal flaws and weaknesses, it is possible the pages of These Black and Blue Red Zone Days reveal clues to reserves of hope and hidden potentials yet to be discovered. Or claimed. With America and the rest of the world entering new uncharted territories of history in the making, humanity is going to need them.

EXCERPT:

Dear People of Chromatic Distinctions,
I used to tell people I never expected to live past the age of 21 (25 at the latest) because of all the guns and knives and cannons of intentional mayhem aimed at my head or heart from the time I was born. Henry Dumas, whom I loved for every syllable he managed to squeeze out of his genius before a policeman ended his life at age 33, convinced me through his writings to make an effort to stay alive. By doing so, I might make some kind of contribution to a different interpretation of what being Black could or sometimes did mean. Therefore, here I am decades later ducking and dodging the assaults of a sniper germ.

Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah (ISBN  9388125959)

Picture

"The realization of dreams, like every battle for freedom, has always required compromise to one degree or another. When the result of a concession, however, is the mutilation of your soul or the cancellation of someone else's future, then it may be said the desired goal was corrupted or destroyed rather than attained."
--From Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah. Download the free introduction: right here.

The eight captivating stories that make up Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah do not focus directly on the unusual racial dynamics which have influenced the city’s growth and development, or lack thereof, since the days of it founder, James Oglethorpe, and slavery. Instead, they unfold on levels ranging from the private and familial to the public and institutional. They offer examinations of what happens when dreams, visions, and nightmares converge, or clash, within the context of a given life impacted by cultural geographies merging within regions of a creative mind. Oglethorpe would have known something about that.

In “Cities of Lights and Shadows and Prayers,” a writer moves back and forth between awareness of himself in 1990s Savannah and a false memory of interactions with cultural icons in 1940s Paris. “A Brazilian Thanksgiving in Savannah” examines the paradox of an estranged caregiver rediscovering the meanings of family and fate through a surprise holiday visit from Brazilian immigrants. “Trees Down Everywhere” documents attempts to prevent the flooding of a civil rights icon’s historic Victorian home during the ravages of 2016 Hurricane Matthew and at a controversial moment in Donald Trump’s campaign for the U.S. presidency. The title story, “Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah,” confronts the legacy of slavery while the closing narratives examine modern conditions and hopes for the future.

“The Bridge and the Monument: A Tale of Two Legacies” was first published in The American Poet Who Went Home Again. The updated text included in this volume is presented in tribute to Dr. Abigail H. Jordan, whose passing (January 9, 2019) was reported just as edits were undergoing completion. It is also included because of the role it has come to play in ongoing present-day efforts to change the current name of the bridge spanning the Savannah River from the city’s downtown area to Hutchinson Island.

Songbirds and Roses: The Unusual Life Story of an Unusual Poem

Picture
Readers of such titles by Aberjhani as Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah, These Black and Blue Red Zone Days, and The American Poet Who Went Home Again are familiar with his innovative blends of literary style. Songbirds and Roses provides the perfect opportunity for readers new to his work to discover his captivating fusion of personal essay, literary history, spiritual reflections, poetry, and sociopolitical commentary.

Included within the Kindle eBook (ISBN 979-8-9994482-0-0) of the title are vibrant mixed-media digital color paintings by the author-artist, and original black and white newspaper documentation of a key catalytic event. Similarly, the paperback edition (ISBN 979-8-9994482-1-7) features dramatic black and white renderings of the original color plates. More than simple illustrations of the story, they provide an experience of extra-sensory immersion capable, to an extent, of duplicating the shared adventure as the author-poet-artist first experienced it.

EXCERPT:
"I had no sooner decided to share the story of Songbirds and Roses with the world when already ominous political and social conditions intensified at home and abroad. The rights and liberties represented by democracy, many agreed, were losing ground across the globe to restrictions imposed by authoritarian autocracy.

The massive lay-offs of federal workers and the prompt deletion of life-preserving government programs executed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as well as widespread unorthodox Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids––condemned by millions while also cheered by millions––ended the American dream of many legal and illegal immigrants alike."

The American Poet Who Went Home Again (ISBN 9781435717695)

Picture
Just like modern literary life, THE AMERICAN POET WHO WENT HOME AGAIN expands beyond the safety of pages bound by predictability to explore and often confirm exciting creative possibilities. A shimmering collage of memoir, creative nonfiction, literary journalism, and dizzying flights into poetic observation, this is the amazing story of one writer’s rediscovery of his family, his hometown of Savannah, Georgia, and himself.

From the celebrated “Return to Savannah” and the uncut extended version of “This Mother’s Son,” to “Journey through ‘Universes Beyond the Invisible” and “The History that Peace Made,” the author takes his readers on epic jaunt across landscapes of “the soul at work.” Whether dealing with the challenges of care giving and racism or coping with the subtleties of art and spirituality, this is one author-poet and one book that sings with the beauty of hope and the persistence of life itself.

REVIEWS FOR THE AMERICAN POET WHO WENT HOME AGAIN

A Tour de Force!, February 1, 2009
"I love this marvelous book and recommend it, with pleasure, to one and all. Mr Aberjhani's voice should be heard around the world. He is an extraordinarily gifted writer whose words are more than inspirational, intriguing, and eloquent ... they are poetry in motion."
--Reginald V. Johnson, Success-Tapes, Upper Saddle River, N.J.

Insightful Portraits of Writers and Artists
“My wife Martha gave me a copy of ‘The American Poet Who Went Home Again’ for Christmas. I truly enjoyed reading it. The portraits of photographer Jack Leigh, writer Bill Bagwell, and artist Luther E. Vann especially insightful. Although I don’t consider myself a spiritual person, I now approach happenings in Savannah from a new perspective.”
--Robert Keber, editor of The Savannah Literary Journal

Journey through the Power of the Rainbow: Quotations from a Life Made Out of Poetry (ISBN 1312194111)

Picture

More than a book of popular quotes with an abundance of exciting new material, this volume is a powerful literary reference tool for understanding the origins of the most frequently-cited poems, news articles, fiction, memoir, history, and creative nonfiction on the web as well as in contemporary literature. It also provides the largest single selection of quotes by the popular author, many available only in these pages, including the entire special section titled TAO OF THE RAINBOW.

In addition, the book as a whole demonstrates the ability of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Google+ to help make positive and inspiring differences in 21st-century life. It was through social media that the quote which prompted the composition of the book has practically grown into a movement which has helped to stimulate a stronger regard for individual self-worth, and life as a whole, in an era too often defined by mass shootings, ceaseless wars, and chronic depression.

FROM THE INTRODUCTION: “Journey through the Power of the Rainbow represents a condensed compendium of literary efforts from a life dedicated to transforming the themes of injustice, grief, and despair that we all encounter during some unavoidable point of our existence into a sustainable life-affirming poetics of passionate creativity, empowered spiritual vision, and inspired commitment.”

Key words: quotations, famous authors, famous poets, quotes for graduates, source references, Michael Jackson, famous quotes, Barack Obama, authors frequently mentioned on the web, creativity, love, self-esteem, humanity, inspiration, poetry, rainbows, internet, social media, spirituality, cultural arts, history, war, intellectual life, viral news, language...

Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance (ISBN 0816045399)

Picture

The bestselling Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance, first published by Facts On File in 2003 and again by Infobase Publishing in 2010, became upon its initial publication the first comprehensive volume on the much celebrated movement that gave birth to modern black culture. In February 2006, Black Issues Book Review voted the encyclopedia one its “essential titles for the home library.”

Prior to that, it won the Choice Academic Title Award, New Jersey Notable Book of the Year Award, and Best History Book Award. The book has been celebrated for its treatment of an era that not only gave us such outstanding authors as Zora Neale Hurston and leaders like James Weldon Johnson, but laid the foundation for the Civil Rights Movement and provided such lasting legacies as: gospel music, jazz, the blues, rap, and other staples of African-American culture.

It is one of the most frequently cited works on the Harlem Renaissance
.

Visions of a Skylark Dressed in Black  (ISBN 9780966235647)

Picture

Visions of a Skylark Dressed in Black made its debut in 2006, courtesy of BPSE-Publishing in Great Britain. For the most part, that was a good thing but the drawback came in the form of limited distribution for a limited period of time.  The new 2012 edition is therefore the first that will have outlets based across the Internet and the United States.

In addition to the 56 poems contained in the first edition, the revised volume also contains two celebrated works of speculative paranormal fiction titled “Birth as Prologue” and “That Poem is Not My Brother.”

Since the book’s initial release, many of the poems have become some of the most frequently quoted in contemporary literature.

The Wisdom of W.E.B. Du Bois ISBN 080652510x

Picture

“In his many novels, poetry, histories, editorials, plays, and letters, W. E. B. Du Bois poured so much of his blindingly incandescent soul into his writings that no single volume could ever contain all of his words or works.  In fact, had not the historian David Levering Lewis taken it upon himself to pen his Pulitzer Prize-winning double-volume biography of Du Bois, it is quite possible (sadly) that the deeper significance and greater scope of Du Bois’ many exemplary contributions to humanity would have eluded modern readers.

“THE WISDOM OF W. E. D. DU BOIS, part of Citadel Press’ and OpenRoad Media's Philosophical Library and Wisdom Series, employs twelve original essays to showcase excerpts from what seemed to be Du Bois’ ceaselessly prolific pen and life.  Here, to be savored, in bite-sized nuggets of instant motivation and inspiration is Du Bois’ at his most brilliant on such subjects as the dynamics of creativity, the healing joy of love, the prophetic vision of democracy, the spiritual perils of war, and much more. These pages throb with uncompromising faith in the truth and beauty of the human spirit.”

ELEMENTAL: THE POWER OF ILLUMINATED LOVE (ISBN 9780972114271)

Picture

ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love
, a full-sized coffee table book with some  140 landscape pages, is the product of two award-winning creative artists who both have viable links to famous Jazz Age Harlem Renaissance. Artist Luther E. Vann actually studied with artists of the phenomenal period and ELEMENTAL includes statements from him as well as commentaries by others providing informed assessments of his work.

Aberjhani is co-author of Facts On File’s Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance as well as editor of The Wisdom of W.E.B. Du Bois. He has provided an extended biographical essay on the artist in addition to critically acclaimed accompanying poems. The informative text aspect of this book makes it a very valuable one for library collections.

Both the art and poetry in ELEMENTAL have been celebrated worldwide and has a growing audience of devoted viewers and readers. The art has been exhibited in several major museums, including the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia, and at Penn Center on St. Helena Island, S.C. Many of the poems were published in ESSENCE Magazine and other notable publications.

The book was actually something audiences had been requesting for years before it was finally published with the assistance of Savannah, Georgia’s Telfair Museum of Art, which is the oldest public art facility in the American South.

The River of Winged Dreams (ISBN 9780557502882)

Picture

The journey that first started with “Songs of the Angelic Gaze” and continued with “The Bridge of Silver Wings” now moves into even deeper and higher realms of creative wonder in THE RIVER OF WINGED DREAMS. Online readers noted from the beginning that something special was happening as those poems which would eventually comprise “Songs of the Angelic Gaze” popped up in Internet posts every other week, much like the unusual angels which many of the poems described have been said to appear unexpectedly in individuals’ lives.

Movie-goers, television-watchers, and readers of novels –not to mention students of world spirituality-- have long been accustomed to the idea of paranormal partnerships between humans and angels and terrifying clashes with demons. What they had not seen or heard –until “Songs of the Angelic Gaze” -- were such passionate classic struggles presented in the voice of a modern poet  who seemed to have occupied a front row seat to battle in both heaven and hell while transcribing all he witnessed into highly original and powerfully mesmerizing literary art.

Those unfamiliar with “Songs of the Angelic Gaze” and “The Bridge of Silver Wings” will be glad to know that THE RIVER OF WINGED DREAMS contains all the works presented   in the previous volume plus much more. So there is no need for them to purchase the previous title unless they wish to do so for the collectible cover art by Luther E. Vann (though even this is available with more than 60 other reproductions of Vann’s work in “ELEMENTAL, The Power of Illuminated Love”).

Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World (ISBN 978143734203)

Picture

Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World
combines popular music culture, science fiction fantasy, and horror to create a uniquely engaging paranormal epic. The story takes us inside the world of Danny Blue, a young man struggling to make peace with the death of his girlfriend, a gifted artist named Valerie Hyerman whose passing sparks the creation of a controversial spiritual movement. Was her death suicide, murder, or something completely different from either?

The stunning truth unfolds in Froggtown, a college community where many people are said to have “died dirty” and wander the streets in search of release from a spiritual limbo.  Such a town seems an unlikely place for a superstar musician like Jimmy Redfyre to kick off his tour on Christmas Eve, or for his main rival Ruzahn to keep popping up in Danny Blue’s life. Moreover, how is it that both singers seem to have released songs about his life? Equally bizarre are the strange changes that Danny Blue himself begins to experience and that appear to be causing him to evolve from an ordinary human to something not so ordinary at all. Written with the visionary intensity of Franz Kafka, the mystical poetics of Khalil Gibran, and the psychological complexity of Philip K. Dick, Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World is a one-of-a-kind work of extraordinary modern fiction.

I Made My Boy Out of Poetry (ISBN 9780595157655)

Picture

Made My Boy Out of Poetry contains six stories and fifty poems reflecting a synthesis of polished academic form and the raw energy of spoken word culture. It is seen here with the original cover art by celebrated artist Gustave Blache III. Reviews have hailed it for its creative daring, spiritual vitality, and intellectual range. It is often described as “a modern-day underground classic.”

Prior to its publication, work from I Made My Boy Out of Poetry appeared in a number of both well-established and underground  publications. These included: The African-American Literary Review; The Angry Fixx; The Dull Fly; The Georgia Guardian; Out of the Blue; Poets, Artists, and Madmen; The Savannah Literary Journal; and The Savannah Tribune. Later, ESSENCE Magazine featured work from the title.

Weighing in from the University of North Caroline in Greensboro, playwright and poet Mark Smith Soto noted the following of the author: “He has a powerful understanding of the music words can make, not only with their sound but with their meanings… he has intelligence, emotional range, imagination, and is alive to the very tips of his fingers.”
